Songwriting

I never plan to write and it always happens at the most inopportune times (nowhere near a pen and paper, in the middle of the forest, or when I should be writing a lit paper).  Words and phrases just come out and before you know it, I’m in front of my piano banging out random keys until something starts to come together.  Most of the time I get stuck and end up with a line or two, maybe a couple of chords to go with it.  It’s so frustrating, this incompleteness.  But maybe it’s better to leave some things open-ended.  This is what I’m working on now, the melody isn’t there, but I’m hoping that stepping back and giving it some breathing room will help.

You let your hair grow long

I always liked it like that

Does she like it that way too?

You’re taller

And more put together

It’s weird not knowing you

You’ve given her more miles

Shown her more places

Maybe you’ve changed

And all I can say is

Maybe I’ve changed too

You let your mind race

So typical of you

Does she make you nervous?

You push

And pull it all down

Trying to make it perfect

You’ve given her more time

Strung along with more patience

Have you really changed?

All I can say is

Maybe I haven’t changed at all
